Number Bonds and Fact Families

Hi First Grade Parents-

Tonight the students will be practicing using number bonds to make fact families.  I introduced the concept in class in the order of how I would like them to their homework.  The first step is really important because it is the kinesthetic piece- actually moving the numbers around.

1.  They will use number bond mat and cut out numbers to create a fact family/number bond.  Here is what it will look like:

2.  Have them describe to you the two parts (ie- 5 and 3) and the whole (8).  You can discuss how putting the parts together by adding you make a whole.  By taking one of the parts from the whole/subtracting you are left with another part.  They can actually move the numbers together and apart if you would like to take it a step further.

3.  Have them record their number bond/fact family on the recording sheet.  We wrote on the table in class, and I told them they probably should not do this step at home : )
Here is what we did in class and the recording sheet that should be in their binder:

As always, please feel free to email with questions or jot a note in their binder.  Feedback is always so helpful!  Have a good evening!
Candi : )
